Mystery Solved!
I just found out the reason for my terrible start to the day (which subsequently got a lot better thank you), the fullest moon in 18 years is on tonight! The view was quite amazing to enjoy from the balcony actually, it was pitch dark before I even thought to take a pic:
Unfortunatly I couldn't see any noctilucent cloud's tonight despite the great weather and clear skies here in Pforzheim (as it's too far south), but you can catch a bunch of pics from around the world from photographers much more skilled than myself on the Space Weather website.
