Hello Dublin, Goodbye Ireland

Most of the fun of Dublin is the actual getting to Dublin, the coast is amazing:

Of course once you're already there, it's time to party!! :-) I certainly got my money's worth that night going to 10+ bars, this one having the best live band I'd heard in a long time!

Unfortunatly that was the only website friendly pic I have from the night, most of the rest is through the hungover eyes of the day after, including this one of the bar right next to the cheap and convenient hostel I stayed at (and used the bed for like only 4 hours before having to check out!):

Unfortunatly my quick foray to Ireland did not occur during Hurling season (a great Irish sport as brutal as hockey, which is of course why I love it!), however I did catch a game on TV and this chap downtown walking with a stick:

Phonix park right in the heart of Dublin is plroof that Dublin is the big-small city. The day was great and the view was even better:

More from the HUGE park:

A pretty sexy rental car if I do say so myself. Notice the Tim Hortan's sign in the background, it's at the Dublin Zoo now! Although only on weekends :-( and only with 12 euro admission :-( :-(

The south and north coast right inside/outside Dublin is great, I can't believe it didn't rain a single drop my entire stay here!

Dublin docks:

There's some cool small islands just 500-1000 meters off the Dublin city coast:

Ok, well some are a little farther away than that, but you get the point:

They've even got a mini-hill for quick hiking and great views, and with that I was off to say my farwells to Germany...

Killkenny Without The 'H'

Having loved Cork/Blarney and the surounding so much we arrived in Killkenny a little later than expected. Combine that with the absurd darkness starting at like 4pm and you at least get cool church pics from the city:

The next day (no comments on the night before!) we hit the castle which is located right downtown. At first I wasn't so impressed, it's neither big, exotic etc. etc.:

...until you walk through the gates and see the other side! I couldn't believe my eyes, it was like walking through the mirror into Narnia or something! On one side you've got the center of the city and some rather inconspicuous looking castle wall... and on the other a forest oasis! I had to go in and out to check out how the grounds could possibly extend the way they do from where it's located! Wow, a shocker! (and extremely cool place for some spassieren!)

Of course the brewery is a must ;-)

It was starting to get dark and therefor time to rock up to Dublin for the final leg of the journey...

High Seat Bar

Mixing things up until I can get the last of the Ireland pics up, here's the gang sitting up top the seats at "high seat bar" downtown Stuttgart this past Saturday, teasing the locals and having a grand old time :-)

Who you talkin' bout' Willis!?!?

Gribley :-)

What's Timmy saying? Me Tarzan, you Jen ;-)

Can't beat Stuttgart for a good time! :-)

Ireland Wrapup

I can't believe it's been a week already since I returned from Ireland! I'm still uploading pics from this past weekend when I realized there's so much more to get out there from the last trip, so without further ado, more of the unexpected from Blarney (totally worth the trip out), although it felt like there was something huge weighing me down ;-)

One is the loneliest number ;-) The match I was watching wasn't so popular in Ireland, anyways needed a short pit-stop for refreshment, and the bartender was cool :-)

When I got back to Cork I was just enjoying the skyline...

...when...

Crazy seeing a fire spring up like that out of nowhere! Anyways no lasting hard to the skyline :-)

Just outside Cork they've got an island on an interior bay, this is taken from just over the bridge:

The locals and tourists alike go to the island for a taste of the coast and the famous church there (which of course I totally can't remember the name for):

Sittin' on the dock of the bay...

Next, on to Killkenny!

Doughboys - Shine

Shine

I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
Feel like I'm buried and obscured beneath,
this non-impressionable.

I'm not alone.
I'm not alone.
I'm like a one in a million faces,
bound to your front door.
And then you call.
And then you call...

Make me feel so bright.
Make me feel real and so white,
It's like I shine [x7]

Dull, dark is how I feel,
and to shine would be unreal,
and it's really no big deal.
Cus your eyes are bright enough,
your eyes are bright enough for everyone to shine,
It's like I shine [x7]

It's like I shine...

Was hast du mit mir gemacht

EuroRoss Kazakhstan Bound?

I've just installed a BlogMap for the site but I seem to have gotten the longitude and latitude wrong hense the EuroRoss site is listed as being located in Kazakhstan! I wonder if the Kazakhstani government will have as big a problem with me temporarily misrepresenting myself as they do with Ali G's Borat character ;-)

I'll try and correct this as soon as possible :-)

Today's Gadling photo of the day rocks, surfing in Norway. Get the entire pic sequence over on Flickr.

And in funny news, the entire cleaning staff at a Slovenian casino was fired after they realized some of the employees were using industrial strength vacuum cleaners to literally "suck" the money out of slot machines. Will wonders never cease!

EuroRoss Site Upgrades

I've been implementing some new tools and services to EuroRoss, hopefully you'll see (and like) the changes (although some like the trackbacks of the last post) will be transparent to most users.

Thanks for riding alone with EuroRoss!

More To Blarney

Everyone knows about the Blarney stone, but what isn't talked about so much are the other things Blarney has to offer. I've already posted a pic of the rock-on! bars in the small village, but here I'd like to emphasize the amazing grounds surrounding the castle and town, perfect for a little bit of hiking and getting in touch with mother nature - the Irish way. The gateway to the forest path:

The picturesc scenerey made me feel like I was in a Robin Hood movie:

I was lucky with weather the entire 4 days in Ireland, not a drop of rain, even if it was just atouch frosty sometimes:

A very cool tree stump thrown. Here I am, king of the forest plotting what lands to invade... or was I wondering what was for diner? ;-)

There are plenty of wishing bridges, rivers and wells to throw in a penny for good luck. It was funny watching a couple boys roll up their pants and wade through the freezing cold water looking for a few silver pieces. I threw my lucky penny in downstream where I doubt anyone will be looking for it ;-)

There's so much more to Blarney than just kissing the Blarney stone. I was pleasently surprised how much Blarney had to offer and I'll definatly be hitting it again for a few more days!

XML Feed Update

I'm working on the site RSS/feed stuff, hopefully I haven't broken it for anyone who is already subscribed. If you subscribe to my feed please shoot me a comment so I know I didn't totally screw it up.

Ireland Part Deux

Not even 15km outside of Cork is the famous Blarney castle, home of the Blarney stone. It all sounded very touristy to me but you know what they say, when in Rome...

It started out good, more fantastic pubs which are litterally anywhere and everywhere in Ireland. Rock on!

The path to the castle:

The castle was really cool, surprisingly interesting (I had figured it'd be more of the same, and it is although different somehow). Here's the view from the battiments:

The landscape around Blarney is amazing:

Picture-esc:

Drumroll please... of course I had to kiss the stone for good luck. I'm not sure about when that luck actually kicks in, is it right away or stored up for a rainy day? Well I did have some great beers that night so it probably works intantly ;-)

No visit to any castle is complete without a visit to the dungeons, here's looking to the future:

Reflection

It's unbelievable that as the year winds down how much has stayed the same... and how much has changed.

Sometimes a cold beer with your best buddy helps put things into perspective. Here's to the future, I hope the next years are as painfully amazing as the last.

Ireland Here I Come!

The tidal wave of Ireland posts is about to begin and it all started with a stop at Ryanair Beauvais airport just outside Paris. Part cheese, part good omen, in the parking lot of the airport there's an Irish pub housed within a tent! Hilarious:

Despite a slight delay which I'm beginning to realize is standard procedure for RyanAir flights, we were off and running. Sorry London, I'm not stopping over there today! (you can just make out the river and Millenium Dome through the fog)

First stop: Cork. Here's the setting; last soccer/football game of the season, Cork city in second place in the standings by one point to Derry and hosting them at home for the final game. They need a win to take the season championship as a tie just won't get it done. Almost every B+B (bed and breakfast) was booked because of the HUGE game, but we managed to catch an amazing place here (pitured below) with a sweet ass pub beside it (although there are soooo many sweet baby pubs in Ireland, more on that in a later post):

Unfortunatly I don't have many pics from that night, there was just too much going on! Basically the team won 2-0, amazing game, crowd poured onto the field and partying downtown commenced. The hung hangover I sported the next morning was totally worth the bang of a first night in Ireland.

No time to rest, the next morning off to the coast followed by an evening roadie to Killkenny...

Debra Lafave Is A Slut

I can't believe that stuff like this actually happens. Actually I can since there was the small incident in high school where one of my underage colleagues was banging some crazy 45+ year old wife. Where is the justice when nothing happened with that situation where the chick was nasty looking, but when the girl's hot the guy gets ragged out so the tang stops a flowing.

Ok this post is going somewhere I don't want it to go, here's the pics, decide for yourself:

Actually I'll also add this quote from the site: "Thank goodness she's free! Debra is super-hot, and there are thousands of teenage boys looking forward to hitting that sweet ass again". I guess that pretty much sums things up.

You're Beautiful

My life is brilliant,
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

Yeah, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Fucking high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.

But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

- James Blunt

Sunday Relaxing On Wednesday

A couple Sunday's ago, feeling a little sick, feeling a little run down, a full night by the fire really gave a pick me up. Due to travel etc I'm no longer at access to a fireplace but I'll definatly be in "Sunday fireplace" mode tomorrow after another crazy week of travel tied with work to complete. My digi-fire will have to do ;-)

Monday Airport Surfing

Layovers suck. Layovers when you're hungover from an amazing 4 days in Ireland suck even worse. Here's what I've learned in the past 26 minutes online:

Need a beer? Check out all the open beer and wine store locations in Toronto at Beer hunter. Or for our international readers go check out the best bars in the world.

The world is coming to an end, Snoop Dogg has his own brand of "hot Doggs".

This is how the spaghetti crumbles.

Weebl and Bob Toons

IF you're looking to kill some time, go check out the Weebl and Bob toons. Some of em are great, some not so, but if you're feeling silly they'll certainly hit the spot! :-)

Geek Heaven

Now I don't want all you geeks to think EuroRoss has forgotten about you at all! Here's something for your geek weekender pleasure, a site devoted to babes dressed up in the famous Princess Leia costume, enjoy! :-)

I still remember that episode of friends where Racheal dresses up like Leia for Ross. Yummy :-)

Friday Fever

In Paris every Friday night they have what they call "Friday Fever" :-) No it's probably not what your dirty mind is thinking, it's when they shut down some of the roads for a whole crowd of rollerbladers to go through Paris! The course is fun (although not as easy as you'd think) and takes you through a different path each week. The whole course run takes about 2.5 hours or so although there's a 15-20 minute break in the middle (thank god cus it's at the top of a very big/long hill!).

After numerous Friday's where I just couldn't make it (I have a very busy social schedule to keep don't ya know ;-) ), I was finally able to go last Friday. The crowd was HUGE!

Et voila, on y va!

The crew, training for next summer's 24 hour "roller" in Le Mans! :-)

Don't let this pic at the break fool you, some of us were knackered by the half way point!

...but we did finally make it to the end and the workout, fun and fever was truely worth the effort. Click on the pic below for a short vid of the final corner pass, ALLLLLEEEEEESSSSSS!!

First Day Blues

You've gotta love finishing that first day of work. All the nervousness over with, all that's left is to go and cash your first days hard earned pay...

(via Digitalfog)

With Or Without You

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

With or without you
With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I’m waiting for you

With or without you
With or without you
I can’t live
With or without you

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

My hands are tied
My body bruised, she’s got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

With or without you
With or without you
I can’t live
With or without you

With or without you
With or without you
I can’t live
With or without you

Paris A La Bike

Sometimes I can't believe life in Paris. Take a gander at these samples from my last bike trip starting off with this fancy dancy restaurant at the edge of one of the city's forest parks:

The mystical falls:

Some chaps getting together for a friendly game of cricket. A great way to enjoy a break from the cycling:

As the sun started to go down I couldn't help but stop and take this long distance shot of the Arc from La Defence:

Into the forest park:

The view from the top of one of the castle mounts (now converted into a public park):

The castle gardens are impeccably kept for tourists and residents alike:

The view from the other side, not bad eh! What's that big tower on the left? :-)

Sometimes I just can't believe how lucky I am to be in Paris, Germany, Canada and soon London and Ireland, on such a consistant basis! :-) :-)

Tuesday Afternoon Internet Stuff

It's been a long time since I've been able to sit down, geek out and go through all those links that I save day in and day out for a rainy day post, so enjoy!

The next big thing? Doubt it, but "freeline skating" looks cool none the less.

Why not have a big old pillow fight in Milan? :-) Why not Toronto also? Some pics.

The 100 greatest Internet moments. I still love this stick man karate sequence, wow was that a long time ago or what!

Statistics to the sports rescue. Looks like they're getting closer to measuring what sports fans have known for ages, it takes more than skill, it also takes chemistry.

One of them has just got to go :-)

The ten worst kind of sports fans.

Am I in the right city? According to CNN I'm not! This is what happens when you get an intern to do your TV graphics for ya:

And finally, this old age home in Ireland sees higher numbers of family visits after they open up a pub in the home, hilarious! Can't wait to get to Ireland this week! Cheers everyone!

Ok Go

This is rad. Apparently this cheap boy band "Go To" was practicing their upcoming video dance sequence when long story short the girlfriend posts it on the Internet, it gets downloaded over 5 million times and they become a success. Check out the video, it is hilariously AWESOME!

Creative Poverty

From Arieanna over at Blogaholics, a creative bum with a funny request for money:

The sign says: "Entire family killed by ninjas. Need money for karate lessons".

I might even consider giving him money for that one ;-)

8-)

EuroRoss has quietly surpassed 1000 posts... what are you looking at? :-)

Oh Canada!

Some funny things you could learn about Canada if you lived or visited here :-)

If you want to learn more, or want to read an amazingly funny book, go check out "How To Be A Canadian"... seriously it's hilarious.

Stutt-Sha-La-La

I'm still catching up on a bunch of pics from last weeks festivities when I was back in Stuttgart Germany. Here's a couple until I can get the other ones online from last sat's double diner, T-dot doin' her thang in the kitchen:

...of course I pitched in with some cooking and wine of my own :-)

Unfortunatly I somehow lost a bunch of the pics from the night but the next morning I took a pic of the pool place that we eventually crawled out of at 3am, proof that a good time isn't about the place, it's about the people!

I cannot begin to descibe how tired and hungover I was by Sunday night and I still had a 6 hour train ride back to Paris :-(

I can't believe it's already been a week since that pic (the on-train monitor display), time is speeding up!

We Remember

November 11th is the most important day of the year for me as it is the day I (we) remember those that gave their lives and displayed unfathomable courage for our freedom and the freedom of others. The spirit of Nov. 11 is even more appropriate in light of everything that's happening in the world these days. The biggest ceremony was at the Arc:

After the ceremony you can actually go up and get a better look at the wreaths. This is also where I stood in silence in rememberance at 11:11am north american time (5:11pm here in Paris):

Listening to the flag flapping in the wind was eerily calming, click on the pic below for a short video and experience it for yourself:

We remember...

Oh Baby Bikini

I'm getting ready to hit the coast tomorrow, looks like I'm not the only one still in mid-summer bikini training ;-)

Oh Rubik

No joke, there's a World Championship of Rubik's Cube!

Gotta Be 3

Last week at 5am in the morning after a long night out, feeling a bit down in the dumps on how great everything is going in all areas of my life except for one exception of not succeeding in getting a loved one to notice my efforts (which sometime's really weighs down on all the positives), when out of the blue I recieved this pic from a friend that saw it in Barcelona a coule weeks ago.

She said (and I quote): "I thought of you when seeing it".

That put a smile on my face and reaffirmed how I somehow lucked into the greatest group of friends anyone could ever ask for :-) Thanks for the random smile :-)

A sidenote; I returned these pants to the manufacturer... the first and third legs needed hemming! ;-)

Winding Down

Alot's been going on lately that I have been reluctant to write about for fear of jinxing the outcome. Well soon everything is going to be finalized so I've been pondering about the past 2 years, the people and friends I've met, the things I've learned (both academically and otherwise) and all that jazz.

On the subject, I've been wondering what is the value of an MBA anyways? The Slacker Manager looks at the value on a non-Ivey school MBA. I'd have to agree, the value of a MBA depends on the individual and their goals. Inevitably you only get out what you put in! Hopefully I've put my 2 years to good use ;-)

However it's everything that's changed over these years that are the most impressive, or scary even, how much has happened. The memories are great. Even just going through some of the old EuroRoss archives when I redid the site last week makes me remember how amazing the last 2 years have really been.

So much has happened with me and you, my friends.

What's the future of EuroRoss? Well for the site I'm not sure, perhaps it'll keep going in some form or the other, perhaps not. As for EuroRoss the person, well details to follow but PHD studies, finishing this book (and starting #2), consulting around the globe and continuing the torrid pace of fun and experiences are all definitely on tap!! :-)

As for you, well if you're reading this then hopefully we are still in contact as much as a gorup of international MBA's, international friends, and etc. can be with alot of you taking positions in cities all across the four corners of the globe, marriages (congrats to the recent engagement of Domi/Matt, Jules/schieders guy, Mikey/?, Karlsruhe/Hefe, Kenny/blondy, Lars/Henna), children, yadda yadda. If you ARE reading this then shoot me an e-mail, comment, call whatever! I'm all around these days and we should definately stay close.

Ok I'm going to wrap this up as it's already way too mushy ;-) I leave you with two early EuroRoss pics of the first MBA hockey night back inearly 2004 and my first Waterloo homecoming weekender after leaving for my Germany MBA. What an ugly lot we are! :-) :-)

I miss you all!

Safe travels everyone...

Paris Riots

There are nightly riots going on here in Paris. This afternoon I walked by the Pizza Hut I got pizza at 10pm last night after having just arrived back from Germany (it's just a 2 minute walk from the appartment) and stopped dead in my tracks. At some point last night there were burnings there. Over the weekend when I was in Germany there were cars burned down a different street still only a 2 minute walk away. One of my friends had to reverse drive her car away from some brawling men a couple nights ago.

I will post pics when I get my new camera cable, but rest assured it's a real eye opener. Come on everyone, give "peas" a chance!

Hbf Poetry

After fucking the dog on an heart bleedingly important reunion, these wise words posted at the Stuttgart Hbf (main train station) only rubbed salt in the wounds:

Paraphrase: "To have fear is to have already made the mistake"

Sucks that you can never be the professional gamer that you can be when you don't give a ar-eh-tee's a$$ about the outcome as when your heart's on the line and playing on the field. Here's to hoping I didn't lose out completely and will get another crack at the title in the future.

The New Sup'

Ischen!

That's the new "sup", as in wassup! There is no longer any more "was ischen los?", we decided last night at the Irish pub (later confirmed in Schlampalickplatz) that it's just ischen (pronounced ishen) now :-)

So on this sunny Saturday afernoon... ischen? :-) :-)

Happy Halloween!

I forgot to wish everyone a Happy Halloween on the blog! That night I had forgotten about getting candy (it's not really celebrated here in Europe although it's gaining in popularity so there arn't many reminders like decorations around) so I was running around to corner stores grabbing what little candy I could with the few Euros I had left on me to give out to the kids.

Anyways, Happy be-lated Halloween everyone! ;-)

Business Positioning

It's been a long time since I've posted some business related material, so here goes; a great post on creating differentiation with great (borrowed) ideas. From the post:

Step 1:

Find an idea that a business in an unrelated industry has
used successfully

Step 2:

Copy that successful idea.
Adapt it for your own company. And become an instant industry leader without the
risks associated with innovation
Anyways, I love the power of this pic accompanying the article:

Life

There's so much to live for, I couldn't imagine giving it away, but then again I've been blessed with an amazing family, group of friends and other gifts. The statistically minded part of me finds this interesting while my humanitarian side wonders what more can be done to help; the San Fansico Golden Gate bridge graphic of suicides by location:

Wednesday Wackyness Quote Edition

On this crazy crazy Wednesday of stuff to get done I'm reminded of some great quotes from Gizzy during his brief but awesome European stopover, the best three:

1:
Grizz - I love Esso for being suck a good Canadian company.
Ross - Esso isn't Canadian bro.
Grizz - Really? But they sell winter gas!

2:
Grizz - What's 1.3 X 1.6, that's gotta be 3 point something right?

3:
Grizz - it's a little little-er

You Are My Everything

Et si tu n'existais pas
Dis-moi pourquoi j'existerais
Pour traîner dans un monde sans toi
Sans espoir et sans regret
Et si tu n'existais pas
J'essaierais d'inventer l'amour

Dis-moi comment j'existerais
Je pourrais faire semblant d'être moi
Mais je ne serais pas vrai
Et si tu n'existais pas
Je crois que je l'aurais trouvé
Le secret de la vie, le pourquoi
Simplement pour te créer
Et pour te regarder

Et si tu n'existais pas
Dis-moi pourquoi j'existerais
Pour traîner dans un monde sans toi
Sans espoir et sans regret
Et si tu n'existais pas
J'essaierais d'inventer l'amour
Comme un peintre qui voit sous ses doigts
Naître les couleurs du jour
Et qui ne revient pas
