Tuesday Tips

Lots of stuff going on today:

Google released an updated toolbar, Cnet's got a quick video showing some of the new features.

When you die, do you want to become jewerly? (and if so, how much do you think you'd be worth?) ;-)

A very cool commercial.

Um, who's heard of the Lisa Loeb reality show... and why didn't you tell me about it? Especially since she apparently walks around in her gitch! I love it when wholesome chicks with smash hit songs ("Stay") suddenly go all horney and stuff :-)

There's more, but in the interest of being able to get up tomorrow morning, it's bedtime...

Finally

After years of listening to blatant lies from Ottawa Senators spokespeople on how we the fans needed to cut some slack to Daigle and then in later years Bonk, hearing how often "Bonk is a top defensive center that is great on the power play", it's so good to be vindicated by Montreal putting him as a healthy scratch tonight.

Bonk is brutal. He has always been brutal. The only points he got were from linemates using him as a human pylon to bank shots off of into the net. I swear I heard Alfie call "bank" once before bouncing a shot off Bonk's head into the net. Wow, I can't believe I'm even calling him Bonk now (maybe because of the massive relief that he's finally gone) since we always refer to him as "Boink", appropriately I might add.

Well he's finally been recognized as the floating no work bum that he is. Now that Gainey's in charge they're not taking any of this lack of effort crap, no justifications from Hab's management. So sweet.

It took 7 years but finally someone has figured it out.

PS> Have we got a new problem on hand? Emery gets in fights, talks tough and is very inconsistent (either winning convincingly or getting blown out), all things that I almost admired. First the hair dying thing and now with this helmet sitch it seems as though management is getting a little tired of his act... hmmm I wonder might develop there...

The Bulldog Bark

Everyone knows how hockey crazy I am and although the AHL team in Hamilton (the Bulldogs) sit dead last in the division standings, I was able to score some free tix to yesterday's game (thanks Brenda!!) so it was a no-brainer. Who I was really interested in watching was former Ottawa 67 standout Corey Locke, who was drafted by the Montreal Canadians and who now played for their farm team - the Bulldogs.

Things did not start out well, although the Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead in the first, they were constantly on the penalty kill and Locke saw maybe 3 shifts in the first (he was not used on the PK throughout the entire game and not on the power play in the first). They started to play more hockey a third of the way into the second and Locke had a few more shifts. I noticed they played him right away after each of the Manitoba Moose goals, probably to spark some offence as he' currently the leading scorer for the Bulldogs this season.

It was shocking how small he looked out there! I knew he was small but in junior you never really notice because there's so many other small and medium sized guys out there, in this game he looked like one of those Tim Horton's scrimmage kids from the intermission that had lost his way (sizewise, not skillwise).

Locke seemed to gain steam as the game went on, gathering an assist in the second, assisting on another that got disallowed (high stick) and a power play goal in the third to pull the team within one. He even threw a pretty good body check on a guy in the third behind the net, solid. The ending was happy one for Bulldog fans, and I was happy with a solid performance by Locke (discounting the first period) although it was hard to see how he'll be able to elevate his game to the NHL level given the shear differential in physical size and strength. Click the pic below to see Corey Locke's shootout try, the Bulldogs won the shootout 2-1 and the game 5-4.

Overall I'd give the entertainment value of the game a solid 5 out of 5. I'll defiantly have to check out another game soon... Go Bulldogs! :-)

Where's Hamilton?

For those of you living outside of Canada the question posed in the title probably takes on a whole new meaning. What I'm referring to however is the blanket fog that's hit the city today. Truely you cannot see 5 inches from your face. For all you Presians who keep e-mailing for a photo of the view from the appartment... here ya go ;-)

Where On The Web?

Do you know, where you're going to?

An amazing site with blog and video documentation of a climb up Everest.

Drug and illegal immegrant smuggling tunnels from Mexico to the US. Amazing what you can accomplish, now if only they could use that power for good and not evil!

What's it like to work at Google? Or just use Google to find out what happened video game endings. Finally after all these years and multiple hundreds of quarters spent in my youth to no avail, I finally get to see the Golden Axe ending... wow, that was so not worth it. :-)

The Britsh version of the Office is so much better than the American knockoff, although it's been getting better.

Webcams from around the world.

Get through those annoying automated messages on customer support/1-800 lines.

Stewie's got a web radio show, cool!

The only thing funnier than this film is knowing that I owned a copy of that game. Most brutal game ever!

Cool tricks to learn.

What Canadians are known for.

For all my friends that have somehow gotten hooked on online dating, now you can "pod-date" ;-)

A site and book about... about... about... peeing. Peeing all over the place. Ok this post is officially done.

Sidenote: at least it's now free to pee in Paris ;-)

Off for the Weekender!

Stuff that happened this week:

Heat activated urinal ads. Especially effective for you guys with burning herpies ;-)

A brewery in Ottawa gets press in Germany for offering beers with different labels for each of the different political parties in Canada. German even slueths out that it's the Trafalgar brewery.

Better than cable TV.

Hamilheim?

Ok, I'm in Canada right? I'm not so sure anymore. Put aside the fact that it's going to be 15 degrees tomorrow... Jan 27th "middle of winter", but now I'm seeing German retaurants and stores all over the place. This is going to be an interesting weekend drinking German beer (early in the morning mind you) watching the second half of the Bundesliga season unfold.

The best of these stores is Denningers foods of the world. Lots of groovy stuff in there. Best part is that they even have spetzle! Remember how I didn't know what people call that in english (because we don't have that here), well they simply called it egg noodles, so anti-climatic. Spetzle it is and spetzle it'll stay!

Oh and Hamburg picked up that cancer fat man "Ailton" over the break. Thank you, now I don't have to worry about them finishing in the top 5 of the standings ;-) GO VFB!!

It's A Small World

Yesturday I was blown away when Bits tells me she was upgraded to business class on her flight home and just happened to sit next to Canada's own hockey coach legend Don Cherry:

Today I'm walking home from work and get a boom mike on me from Ottawa's own, comedian Tom Green! Man it's a small world out there!

If you're into hiphop or wanna check out what Tom's up to now, go hit the Underground in Hamilton tonight as he'll be playing with his new band. Check the O.R.!!

I don't know how Stevie J has gone from the worst forwarder ever to one of the best, but he has. Consequently I guess it's time to re-evaluate my alcohol intake as it's either that or drifting nuclear waste gas that making me like his shit. Saturday Links and Buzz

A beautiful day not to be on the net, but before I go outside:

Breakups are tough. They're even tougher when your pet parrot is the one to break the news to you.

Doesn't this pic totally remind you of Dawson's Creek? I just saw a show on Star! chronicaling the life of the actors playing the 4 main characters, not too shaby seeing katie holmes grow up! (via Cantor)

Here's a site that's started to list hard to find 1-800 numbers for customer service. Damn it pisses me off that there's even a need for this type a site, fucking companies not getting customer service... ok I move on.

Remember that toy I really wanted, the remote control missiles? Well I really want them now!

Trying out Snippy, cool:

The Bengals are out, but it was a great season of touchdown celebrations by our man Chad Johnson.

Some great intra-preneur advise from Guy K. Many of you are asking me what I'm doing and why I love my new job so much, read this and know that I'm in the early stages :-)

Unsecured webcams around the world. Maps of the World Cup 2006 venues.

When bloggers/podcasters get pissy. Man that's an impressive list of feeder icon links on the sidebar!

She drives me crazy (in a very good way) too. My god I need to change my underwear now. Definatly on my top 5!! :-)

I've been thinking of moving to AVG from Norton for a while now. With the recent expiry of my Norton subscription and this story... goodbye Norton, you were innovators at one time, now you're just slow and buggy.

...and finally I leave you with Guy K's 10 great hindsight advice:

#10: Live off your parents as long as possible.
#9: Pursue joy, not happiness.
#8: Challenge the known and embrace the unknown.
#7: Learn to speak a foreign language, play a musical instrument, and play non-contact sports.
#6: Continue to learn.
#5: Learn to like yourself or change yourself until you can like yourself. #4: Don't get married too soon.
#3: Play to win and win to play.
#2: Obey the absolutes.
#1: Enjoy your family and friends before they are gone.
Enjoy your weekend everyone, a HUGE double home game series between the sens and leafs starting tonight, first time there's been two games, two nights in a row with the same teams in the regular season... it's going to be a bloodbath! :-)

Saturday Quote

Best e-mail forward of the day, certainly put a smile on my face. Warning: business sarcasm in motion:

"I had to laugh at this quote from an entertainment exec in Saul Hansell’s NY Time’s story about Starz offering movies for download.

“We see a market out there of people who are saying, ‘I want to choose what I want to watch, control how I watch it and watch it wherever I am,’ ” said Robert Greene, a senior vice president at Starz…

Yes, that’s a new niche market called everybody."
Some execs just don't get it.

Kiss Me, I'm Hamilton?

This Friday was a bummer since I didn't have my two ladies from Sydney and Loo joining me at the Irish Pub (a convienient 60m walk from the appartment :-)

I certainly hope that wasn't your flight ticket home Al! And don't forget my partner in crime Whitey! (click pic below for short vid)

The world is turning upside down. How else can you explain supermodel Kate Moss throwing herself at Jack Osborne? Ok, well actually you can, this proves that cash, drugs and fame can get you chicks no matter how fat, ugly and dumb you are. But how can you explain this:

THAT is Janet Jackson. No joke. Don't ask me what happened to some of the most astoundingly cut abs in history, I guess they're in there... somewhere.

I honestly think it would be a 24/7 job to get that fat after only 2 years. Seriously.

Mountain Village

In Hamilton it's pretty funny because they call this ridge on one edge of the downtown core "the mountain" despite the fact that any pure bred skier wouldn't even consider it a bunnyhill. Somehow in the minds of the locals I think they feel like it's more like this:

...oh but only if that were true! :-)

Yesturday was not a good day fit wise. All day I felt like I'd puke. With a little TV, food, rest and TLC I was back up to 85% today. Hitting the sack tonight at 10pm will bump that back up to 100% by tomorrow. Thank god I love my new job otherwise the 6:30am wakeup today would not have gone near as well as it did!

Burlington Nights

Having decided that having a three way skype conference between Dave, Stevie and myself at 6pm on Saturday night was probably one of the most pathetic excuses for being men I decided to take the quick hop on the Go and hook up with Whitey in Burlington to check out his condo (that I have yet to see), the HNIC games and the Bur-Scene.

I'd show you pics of Whitey's shaggin' pad but the ladies will just have to check it out for themselves ;-) Add together a large screen TV, full surround sound, computer geek-room, mirror's on the bedroom ceiling and all the travel memorbilia and pics you can imagine and you can see why I almost decided to permanently live there (much to Dave's shagrin):

Chillin' at one of the local pubs, having a few brews, watchin' a little hockey, life in Canada is good :-)

What's more retarted than skype calling on Saturday night? Waiting in line to get into some high school bar. Seriously I'm so over that. Man it was freezing, good thing I sweet talked the bouncer into letting Dave through the line, unfortunatly now I have to be that guys bitch :-( :-)

The local band was rockin' away. Pink hair + standing on tables = good show :-)

Um Dave... why are you peeing on that guys van?

Sports Saturday

It was so sunny and warm today I swear I saw someone walking around in shorts! So much for the great Canadian winter! Time to settle in, watch some hockey AND football and "multitask" with some web surfing. Life is good:

I can't wait to get back to Berlin this year... 10 euro all you can drink pubcrawl you say? ;-)

The Ottawa Senators have found a buyer for the naming rights to their arena. Formally known as "The Corel Centre", it will now be known as "ScotiaBank Place". Quite frankly, that stinks.

All politicians are corrupt. This quick policy questionaire will help you deside who you should vote for in the upcoming elections, but it won't change the fact that all politicians are corrupt.

Ahem. Average national penis sizes... for the record I've spent most of the last 8 months in Paris and I did feel quite at home ;-)

Gross, fish with two mouths. Yeah pollution doesn't have any effect at all.

Germany now has a Hooters! It's in Neunkirchen (near Cologne)... why?... right next to a US military base... oh. And speaking of Hooters... our miss Canada winner:

There's no lesbian kissing in Cricket... ok but there is a bit of Gay erotic grinding.

You may earn millions as a superstar soccer player, but if you touch my woman I'll beat the snot out of ya!

Mac people making fun of Windows people. Funny stuff.

I think I'm getting old, can't remember if I posted this already or not. Hopefully you're also getting old and have no idea either ;-) What the world map would look like proportional to country population:

The British Embasy has World Cup 2006 info for those Kur-A-Zee English fans :-)

Dream On...

Hey, cricket, keep it down
I'm trying to get some sleep right now
And nobody wants to hear your sad
Lovesick, lonesome, bluesy song anyway
You say your love is gone, well mine is too
So put that fiddle away and you
Can watch me drink this amber pain reliever
And in a little while I won't even need her

Then again, if she ever does come rolling up
I've left a space beside my car out in the drive
I'm gonna leave her name up with mine on the mailbox just in case
And a light on so she'll know that I'm alive
Half of me knows she's gone
And the other half just wants to dream on...

There's my girl looking at me
From a photo on a beach about '93
Her head's thrown back, she's laughing
Looks like leaving me was the last thing on her mind
It just makes me want to dream some more
That someday she'll walk through that door
But there's two of me, one on either shoulder
One's whispering, forget it man, it's over

Then again, if she ever does come rolling up
I've left a space beside my car out in the drive
I'm gonna leave her name up with mine on the mailbox just in case
And a light on so she'll know that I'm alive
Half of me knows she's gone
And the other half just wants to dream on...

Dream on
Man, she's gone

Resume Extraordinaire

I thought I'd share some resume writting tips for all my fellow MBA friends who are, or will be, applying for jobs. It's a tough market out there and EuroRoss feels your pain. what better way to help than to actually give you a sample resume that you can model for your own. Europe X-mas

Christmas comes twice this year for EuroRoss :-)

Because I have such great friends in Europe (but because they are a little dillusional about package delivery times to Canada), a bunch of packages from Europe arrived at my parents house for me last week. Of course I'm in Hamilton/Toronto right now setting up my new 75% timeshare pad (which I need a cool name for by the way; club 75? 3 quarters? ok I don't know...), so my parents (loving as they are) bundled all those gift goodness up and sent it on over. :-)

The wait was over! Merry Christmas to me... again. :-) Without furthur ado:... wait stop the presses. I hope you're not expecting much, if you knew my friends you certainly wouldn't ;-) Well it's the thought that counts right?

Everybody needs a little luck in their life, right? I loved my time in Blarney which I'm sure is where the idea for this gift came from, my very own Blarney stone! Quaried from the same one as the famous Blarney. Man I can't wait to get back there this summer, this time you should come join me for a pint... or two! ;-)

Good start, rock on. Skipping past a bunch of cards (thanks gang, you know who you are, or arn't as it were), we now get to something a little more puzzling. M&M's? Um, yeah we have those over here. Thanks, wierdo :-)

This next gift makes me wonder if there was a special on shipping charges for rocks, a lucky rub stone! I'm already grinding this baby down trying to soak in all that luck juice :)

More cards... letters... mom and dad snuck in some brownies, unfortunatly UPS is about as careful with their packages as Microsoft is about releasing secure code; icing all over the place. Don't worry, I can tell you from experience that if you shove the entire contents of the container in your mouth at the same time it all tastes the same ;-)

Da de da... finally, la piece de la resistance. German always comes through and this time he did in spades: a brand new Germany national team jersey in advance of our world cup 2006 game in Germany!! ROCK ON!

All jokes aside thanks to all my peeps in Europe for remembering this guy, even if I did only leave like 2 weeks before Christmas ;-) Most appreciated (I'm dancing around in my jersey, eating M&M's and rubbing my stones all over the place right now! ;-)

Merry X-mas everyone... again :-)

Winners definatly did not get its name from their store or the people that frequent it ;-) While Bittsy was cruising around Win'ers for some new cool threads (she does work way up in Ft. Theo = Trouble

Well we all knew it wouldn't take very long. Looks like Theo's back in trouble, although admittingly it looks like this wasn't much of his fault.

Theo Fleury was one of the NHL and team Canada's star players ever since he burst onto the scene with the Calgary Flames back in 88' when he helped Calgary win the Stanley Cup as a rookie. A great hockey player that you've just gotta love seeing as he plays like he's 7 feet tall despite being one of the smallest players in the league barely breaking 5 feet. And look at those missing teeth!

His career in the NHL however was cut short due to too many trips to the substance abuse program for being an alcoholic. Eventually he just gave up and went overseas to play. Now he's playing for the league leading Belfast Giants (basically the sole reason I wanted to drive 9 straight hours to Belfast while I was in Ireland for a brief stop over a couple months ago but just couldn't pull it). The other night he got into a bit of a broo ha ha with some of the fans of opponent team Coventry. Oh Theo, will you ever learn? :-)

Theo will always be one of the best players in Canadian/NHL history, just look at his inspirational performance in the Olympics 4 years ago.

I just hope he keeps playing in Belfast long enough for me to go see a game next year...

Les Cinq Francais

It seems the "fab five" list is catching on. That's the list popularized in an episode of Friends by Ross who laminates a list of five famous babes that he's "allowed" to approach if he ever gets the chance in life even though he was going out with Racheal. Racheal thinks it's ridiculous and tells Ross no problem (since she thinks he'll never have a chance to meet, let alone date them) and of course hilarity ensues.

Now I've posted my list before, however like all things over time it tends to change (although Alyssa will always be #1!! ;-) Seems like some others are getting in the grove and have been e-mailing me their lists. Some are interesting, some surprising and some plain out weird! For all my North American friends, here's an example of some french sexyness (all french actors):

#5 - Romain Duris

#4 - Vincent Casse

#3 - Vincent Lindon

#2 - Gerard Lanvin

#1 - Gerard Darmon

It must all be in the name, lads if you want to pick up a French girl just tell her your name is Vincent or Gerard (and a famous Canadian movie star) ;-)

So what have ya? Who's on your list? :-)

Hamilton Hoah!

After a freezing inital couple weeks here in Canada when I first arrived back, we've now experienced a bit of a mild front for the past week or so (at least here in Hamilton!). Having basically finished all those annoying move in tasks (then re-doing all the things forgotten in the first setup), I finally had a couple hours tonight after work to get back into my touring ways!
[Sorry Dave, I promise to get those videos posted soon, perhaps right after you send me those pics ;-) ]

Having lived in some pretty mountainous regions in my life it's hard not to full out laugh when the locals describe their ridge bordering the Hamilton city core as "the mountain", none the less it was a refreshing hike up and the view was A-OK! :-)

Sorry for the blurry pics, it gets dark here seemingly at 5pm and my little digi-cam has never been very good at night, although I do love it all the same ;-) This one is of the centre centre Hamilton city core. See that tall building right in the middle with the Christmas tree lights strung up at the top? Yep, that's my new place for the time being :-) I can't wait for summer to bust out the BBQ on my balcony! :-) :-)

I've heard some pretty nasty things about Hamilton. Even having only been here for a couple weeks I already know some of it's true ;-) But I'm also discovering some nice surprises, tonights initial tour was no exception:

After almost 2 hours skimming along the ridge... ahem I mean "mountain", it was time to rock back. I was a bit turned around (I'd never been outside of the 6 main blocks downtown until tonight) and was pleasently surprised when I came around the forest bend to see my glowing tower in the distance. It looked sooo much closer at that time than it actually was... maybe it IS more of a mountain ;-)

The coolest "toy" I've soon in a long time. The SkyScout allows you to point the viewer at any star and get its name and interesting facts about it. You don't even have to know where you're pointing it, it'll tell you at any given time of the year what interesting things there is to look at.

Man I wish I had one of these when I was a kid... actually I wish I had one of these NOW!! One day these things will be even powerful enough to see things like this:

...all without having to leave the comfort of your own backyard :-)

Busy Bee

Buzzing around the net this week I picked up a few drops of honey:

This Flickr photo set has a bunch of old German beer coasters.

Best outdoor/hiking/extreme sport store ever: Mountain Equipment Co-op.

The Edge gives a yearly question to some very smart cookies to see what their responces are. There's a ton of them there but wading through them will really get your mind cranking.

French youth have a "secret" language where they reverse the sylables of each word so their parents can't understand what they're saying. They think it's cool... it's not. What is cool is this pic from some ancient times in France:

Does anyone use Archive.org?

What this guy learned at MIT (outside academics).

Toys that I, as a "mature" adult still want: Battle tanks and Sumo suits (but not those ones, I want the real spongy ones that you can actually fight with!).

Some vids from CES (Consumer Electronics Show).

Bzzzzz.... I'm out.

Totally In

Scrunchy boots are totally in. So's Sienna Miller for that matter ;-)

She's definatly knocking on the front door of the lamo-top 5 list! :-) You can go and check out them both in action in the movie "Alfie". Those boots were certainly made for walking!

Goodbye Al

Last night was the gold medal game of the World Junior Hockey Championships which this year are being held in Vancouver Canada. Now readers of this blog know how much of a hockey fanatic I am, and in how much esteem I hold this tournament (the most exciting hockey of the year with the sole exception of a compelling WHC, Olympics or the odd Stanley Cup series). These junior players are not playing for fame or fortune, they're playing for the passion of the game and for their country.

This year Canada was actually an underdog due to their lack of highly skilled draft picks (most of who although young enough to play were too good and stayed playing in the NHL, need I say it, players like Crosby) and young inexperienced players. They were actually rated as low as 3rd or 4th to the dominate US and Russians (both teams which had a high number of skilled 19 year olds)... but they pulled it through in one of the most exciting hockey games EVER!

The first period was fast and furious with a pace only a Canada-Russia matchup can garner. Russia was actually pouring it on with an initial 15-4 shot lead. Thanks to some great Pooge goaltending and hard checking by the team the lads were able to withstand it and shove in 2 quick goals at the end of the period. Combine a Russian goal being missed, a crossbar and a total domination by Downie knocking the top Russian players off their games (Malkin had only 2 shots all game!!), and the Russians were done. By the third it was 5-0 with the Canadians coming in waves.

The tears of sadness on the Russian players faces and the tears of joy on the Canadians faces said it all. What a game, what a tournament, great job lads... bringing home the gold!

It was also a sad night however as it was time to wish our good friend Al safe travels on her way back to Australia for another year :-( No worries though as we've got it all figured out, see you for the Australian national holiday January 2007! I can't wait to get my board and chill by the beach learning to surf from the best for a solid 3 weeks. Add in a cross-continent trek and you've got one hell of a first go at doing Oz in style :-)

So Al, take it easy down there and warm up the waves for me ;-) Cheers!

Once again, congrats to our boys for bringing home the gold. Few thought you could do it and you proved them all wrong. Boo-Yeah!! :-) :-)

2006 World Junior Champions

Time to hit the sack, got a full day of hockey (tomorrow is "Hockey Day in Canada with all 6 Canadian teams playing each other in a row) and NFL playoffs, Go Bucs!! Man it's good to be back home for a bit! :-)

They're Both Back!

As of 10pm tonight my high speed (that's sympatico ULTRA high speed for those of you scoring at home!) finally got transfered. I say finally because although it got connected one day early it's still way too long to go without a stable connection. My geeky world is back in equilibrium ;-)

Also back is Avril's sexy style, hopefully she won't go through that "ho" faze again either. Perhaps marriage has got her back into the groove ;-)

Blog Break

It's been the longest break I've ever taken from blogging and it's been fantastic. Moving into my new place is almost complete (Friday party to wish Al goodbye as she's on her way back to Australia for another year, everyone's invited, bring own sleeping bag) and high speed gets installed in 3 painful days ;-) Working away today on my day off for my first major presentation this week, wish me luck! :-)

Anyways, EuroRoss will be back up to full speed by the end of the week (and yes Dave I promise to post last weeks video's ASAP). So until then, Happy New Year everyone.

Safe Travels...
